Congratulations are in order to Katie Eber, who was recently selected as the Poet Laureate of Wallingford, CT! Eber, an Education Specialist for Outreach at CT Public Learning, was chosen out of a pool of applicants after submitting a portfolio of her work to a search and review committee comprised of members from the Wallingford Public Library, local poets, and members from the town’s education community.
When notified of her selection as Poet Laureate, Eber was stunned. “It was a bit of a shock – I had just received several rejections from journals that same morning, so it definitely tipped the scales on the day.”
The Poet Laureate’s responsibilities include working with the Wallingford Public Library to promote the reading, understanding, and writing of poetry and working with other local poets to create opportunities around poetry and writing. An honorary position with a two-year term, the Wallingford Poet Laureate was created to communicate the value of poetry and use poetry as a means to engage, educate, and entertain the community at large.
Eber says she believes in this mission and likes the idea of using poetry as an inroad to building a stronger community. “Writing a poem is like wrapping a very personal gift, and when you share it with someone, everyone emerges from that experience with a new understanding of themselves and each other. It’s a cool thing that all writing does, but poetry does it especially well.”
Eber is a graduate of Roanoke College and holds and MFA from Fairfield University. Her poetry has been published in the Dash Literary Journal, Hobo Pancakes, Garbanzo Literary Journal, Quail Bell Magazine, White Stag, and MadHat Lit.
In her current role as Education Specialist for Outreach at CT Public Learning, Eber serves as a coordinator for early childhood and educational outreach events and initiatives and as an instructor for high school partnerships and programs. Eber also works to develop Thinkalong™, CT Public’s media literacy and debate tool for middle and high school students.
