CPBN’s Learning Lab has a partnership with Hartford’s Journalism & Media Academy Magnet School (JMA) to offer various programs for its high school students.
The Learning Lab at CPBN serves as a day-time satellite campus for these students. Past student work includes Teachers’ Stories, where students research a teacher, conduct an interview and construct the video narrative.
• Film: The course focuses on film education and the technical skills involved in cinema. Students learn how to handle a camera, photographic elements of a story, sound capture, film styles, storytelling examples, critical analysis of movies and film technique. One student project to come out of this course was this horror film.
• Gaming: Students analyze storytelling techniques involved in games. Students learn the conventions of how to tell a story through gaming and then collaborate to develop their own games.
• Youth Radio: Offers instruction in audio storytelling. Students learn and practice journalism by uncovering and reporting on education, utilizing their unique perspective as students.
