With instruction from UConn Journalism graduate Tikeyah Whittle and help from WNPR’s staff including Executive Producer Catie Talarski, Reporter Dave DesRosche, and News Director and Host of Where We Live John Dankosky, students in the Youth Radio Apprenticeship are learning to discover and tell stories that not only capture their interests, but also make for compelling and relevant conversations.
What Do Students Learn from Youth Radio?
The Youth Radio Apprenticeship teaches students how to be expert storytellers. Our students receive hands-on instruction in newsgathering, critical analysis, and other literacy skills. Access to leading journalists and media professionals prepare our students for college and career paths in various fields including journalism, communications, public relations, and advertising.
Which Skills Can Students Develop?
Youth Radio students learn how to be journalists, using new skills such as:
- creating rundowns for news stories and storyboards
- research for current-events and other topics of interest
- multimedia audio and video production
- public speaking and presentation
